European initiative to standardize QCT metrics in CF population data

Launched in 2022 by the Lung Analysis Lab at Erasmus MC, the ENRICH project is set up to significantly strengthen the clinical value of the ECFS Patient Registry (including data of 54,000 patients) by introducing a standardized and validated method to quantify structural lung abnormalities from chest CT. It is the first-ever initiative to integrate AI-powered imaging outcome analysis into the European Cystic Fibrosis Society (ECFS) Patient Registry (which contains data on 54,000 CF patients).

Project highlights

  • Start date: October 2020
  • Observational pilot study: Dec 2020 – Nov 2021
  • 1st results publication: Nov 2021
  • Expected end date: Jan 2025

Contribution by Thirona

Thirona is conducting quantitative analyses of structural lung abnormalities using selected metrics to monitor treatment efficacy and disease progression, and to identify prognostic factors.

  • LungQ® BA: For precise quantification of bronchial wall thickness and bronchus-to-artery ratios.
  • LungQ® MP: For quantification of mucus plug volume and count.
  • LungQ® VERA: For air trapping assessment
“Quantifying lung abnormalities provides a crucial new capability for the registry, allowing us to integrate essential data on structural lung damage – particularly when working with such a large patient cohort. Manual analysis at this scale isn’t feasible, but automated tools make it both possible and reliable.”
Dr. Daan Caudri | Director of LungAnalysis Lab and Assistant Professor, Erasmus MC
